What is an eSIM?

Quick answer

An eSIM is a SIM card that is downloaded rather than posted to you. Your phone already contains a small reprogrammable chip, and an eSIM package writes a carrier profile onto it, so you get mobile data without swapping a plastic SIM tray card.

How it differs from a plastic SIM

• Nothing physical ships. You install the profile yourself from the details attached to your order.
• Your existing SIM can stay in the phone, so you keep your usual number for calls and texts while the eSIM carries data.
• The profile is tied to the device you install it on. It cannot be moved to a second phone later.

What you need

• A device that supports eSIM. Check yours at /help/device-compatibility.
• A device that is not carrier locked.
• Wi-Fi at the moment you install, because the profile is downloaded over the internet.

Important

Installing an eSIM is not the same as activating it. When your data allowance starts counting depends on the package you bought - see when can I use my eSIM.
